A promising new vision for preserving Ireland’s marine and coastal resources

Minister of planning peter Burker recently announced in his statement the outlines of along_ term plan for the next twenty years to preserve the Irish coast and develop and exploit the various sources of marine wealth.
One of the priorities of this plan is to maintain abalance between several aspects, including the protection of the environment and economic resources such as fish ,and also interest in tourism affairs and marine activities ,and the citizens enjoyment of them.
peter Burke says that he is proud to lead this program ,which is aqualitative and historic shift in changing the preception towards the coasts of Ireland,which will star working with it starting next year.
the size of Ireland’s coasts is seven times the size of its land area, with an estimated coastal area of about 490,000 square kilo meters, which is one of the most diverse and rich coastal areas in the world.
Ireland also has the longest coastline in the European Union.
these coasts are one of the richest coasts environmentally, where marine organisms are varied,which provides many opportunities for fishing and various marine activities and tourism.
On the other hand,these coasts represent an important part in enriching the economic side of the country, providing more than 34,000 full_time job opportunities ,an increase of 13% over last year,as well as pumping more than 6.2 billion euros in exchange for the provision of seafood and various tourist activities.
Coasts are also being used to provide renewable energy, which is in line with the establish trend of Ireland moving towards the use of clean energy.
On the other hand ,the recent Corona virus crisis has proven beyond any doubt the importance of beaches for the mental health of citizens and those who fled there to get some pleasure after the end of the imposed ban period.
In view of the importance of all of the above, the government has set a future plan for preserving coasts and developing marine resources with in a framework titled ” the National plan for Marine Coasts” to be completed by 2040.
in this context ,new permits will be made for all marine and coastal activities,which will be implemented upon completion of the outlines of the plan by the end of 2020.
