Michael Gove: Ireland may play an influential role in the course of the London-Brussels talks

Michael Gove , a member of the English parliament, told RTE News, during his recent visit to Northern Ireland, of the important role that Ireland could play in the expanded London-Brussels talks on the exit of the United Kingdom from the European Union.
He also stated that the free trade agreement must be resolved ,especially after the appointment of the new Dublin government ,and the tendency of the majority of the English parliament to complete the agreement.
He pointed out that despite the UK’s exit from the European Union on January 31, there are still many sticking points regarding its member ship that have not been finally decided upon during the exit transition period ,especially those related to the provisions of the Free Trade Agreement.
Gove emphasized that although there are still many discussions to be completed ,and the Irish government devoted itself to the benefit of its citizens first ,he believes that there is great hope for a satisfactory agreement, especially after his meeting with the Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney.
He explained that the postponement of the meeting of Micheal Martin ,prime Minister of the Irish government with Boris Johnson ,the British Prime Minister ,is due to mourning for the former Irish Prime Minister John Hume, who is considered one of the most important figures in the history of Ireland that should be celebrated.
He referred to Johnson’s desire to continue talks with his new counterpart Martin, as he used to with his former counterpart ,Leo Varadkar, and the extent to which Martin was keen to strengthen these relations in the future more and more.
According to the terms of the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union , the British government must put in place a new system for a free trad agreement between the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, in accordance with the avoidance of setting customs border barriers for the island in the future.
Gove’s visit aimed to clarify the details of the economic aid that will be provided to the business sector that has been negatively affected by the Brexit agreement ,where an amount of 335 million pounds will be pumped to cover the costs of goods that are important from the United Kingdom.
The absence of the free trade agreement from the Brussels talks so far raises concern the economic sector in Northern Ireland, where the picture remains unclear on the mechanism of trade exchange across the borders of Northern Ireland and the rest of the European Union within the frame work of activating Brexit.
