Schools 70 notified today that they have been selected for inclusion in the first phase of the Safe Ways to School Program
The first phases of implementation of the Safe Routes to School program will begin , which aims to find new and innovative ways to walk, cycle and cycle safely to school in order to reduce congestion at school gates and increase the number of students who walkor cycle to school by providing walking and cycling facilities the exact details of the works that will be implemented in the project will be determined.
The program is funded by the Ministry of Transport through the National Transportation Authority (NTA) and with the support of the Ministry of Education., schools are coordinating the programme, while funding will be provided to local authorities who will play akey role in infrastructure delivery along the access roads and at the school gate.
The School Safe Roads Program will also begin work on the development of roads for 170 schools across Ireland, wih 15€ million allocated to projects included in the first phase of the school Safe Roads Programme. Subsequent schools will be dealt with on a rolling basis in each local authority and these will be provided the funds are from the 1. 8 billion euros funding earmarked in the government`s program to support sustainable transport. Implementation of this program will also be supported by the recruiment of additional staff to local authorities , as announced by the Ministry of Transportation in January 2021. Infrastructure officials will coordinate with phase One schools over the coming weeks to ascertain problems that schools encounter at the school gate and on the journey to the school to begin Completion of project implementation .
