Turn Ireland`s largest toxic site on Haulbowline Island into a stunning theme park
Irish Prime Minister Michael Martin , Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney and Minister for Public Expense Michael McGrath have officially opened people`s Park on Haulbowline Island in the port city of Cork. A valuable asset because it is stunningly designed with panoramic view directly over the harbour.
The Haubowline site, the headquarters of the Irish Naval Service, was also the only site for steel works in Ireland from1939 until it closed in 2001, dumping 640,000 cubic meters of toxic steel waste, which included heavy metals and carcinogens such as chromuim 6, extensive repair work began the scope,at a cost of €26 million, has been approved by Cork City Council over the four years, transforming the site from a steel dump into a stunningly designed public park and tourist attraction.
Toxic substances have been removed, clean topsoil brought in ,the area turned into playgrounds, trails ,and bike paths, and in the long term a water sports center will be establised. Outdoor seating is provided with great views of Cork Harbour.
Mr. Martin commended the efforts made by all involved and concluded his speech by thanking in particular the officials in Cork County Council and the Department of Agriculture and the Navy for their successful management of this development , describing it as an exceptional project and a real achievement as it will provide tremendous profits, in terms of employment and lesiure, to both the community Local and visitors from all over the world.
