Cork City Council is the first local authority in the country to launch an innovative air quality strategy
Earlier this week, work began on the installation of five devices designed by German company Green City Solutions and costing 340 million euros and paid for by the Irish national transport authority called ” City Tress” On Saint Patrick Street near Frensh Church Street and in the Grand Barda near Cork City Library , ”City Tress” acts as supplement , not a substitute for, real trees . Tress convert carbon dioxide into oxygen and provide shade and are important for climate and biodiversity , yet they do little to combat pollution Air caused by fine dust , but these installed units contain algae that absorb air pollutants such as particulate matter and nitrogen oxides and release clean air.
Cork City Council is the first local authority to launch the Air Quality Strategy 2021-2026 with short , medium and long – trem goals.
Meanwhile , Dublin City Council has not determined whether it has plans to install similar devices in the capital , and both Limerick and Waterford councils have indicated they will wait to see how the devices perform in Cork City.
Cork City Council said it will continue to work closely with community groups, ESB, University College Cork (UCC), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Muster Technological University ( MTU) to develop and implement the long- term strategy.
It is worth mentioning that City Tress devices are installed in the streets of cities such as London, Berlin and Glasgow
