Ireland’s newest Technological University (TUS) opens across six campuses
The new TUS will offer a more disverse range of reseearch and degree- granting in new fields, will have a student population of 14, 000 and a staff of 1,200 working across six campuses in Limerick, Athlone, Ennis , Clonmel, Thurles and Clare counties, serving a population of almost 850,000.
This Technological University has the potential to bring about a significant transformation in higher education for the population of the Central and Midwest region, it was established in order to advance development and investment across across the Central and Midwest regions while consolidation experiences that would enhance their comptitveness , attract foreign direct investment and creat job opportunities for a group of its graduates.
The announcement of the opening of the New Technological University follows several years of intense collaboration between The Althlone Institute of Technology and the Limerick Institute of Technology , which also includes the Limerick School of Art and Design .
TUS is an abbreviated title inspired by the Irish word ” the Beginning ” which symbolizes the provinces and territories associted with the Schannon River and also symbolizes the flow of knowledge and ideas .
Professor Vincent Konan , President of TUS , stated that it will be a center for research and innovation for enterprises and will greatly help in promoting broader and deeper skills that make regions more attractive for inward investment and will help boost Irish economic growth by approximately €420 million annually .
