Health Products Regulatory Authority(HPRA) warns the public of the dangers of buying illegal medicines online
The Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) has issued a warning against buying medicines online, the public should be aware of the dangers of buying medicines online from unreliable sources, it is not only about people wasting their money on a fake or counterfeit product , but it is potentially more dangerous Much more than that, because these drugs cause significant risks of side effects that clearly affect human health.
The large number of illicit drugs discovered in 2021 is very worrying and when combined with the 2020 number it means that more than 3.2 million units were seized over that two years ” said Mr Grainne Power Director of the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA
Members of public are a ware of the health risks associated with purchasing medicines from unreliable on line sources and should only buy medicines from authorized sources , stressing that the agency works closely with An Garda Síochána and Revenue’s Customs Service and with Customs to combat the supply of illegal medicines to Ireland .
The authority has issued an advisory on the dangers associated with purchasing prescription drugs online, which can be found at hpra.ie.
This comes as more than 1.6 million units of counterfeit drugs have been seized by HPRA.
Among the illegal drugs that have been confiscated over the past 12 months and have been circulated are .
- Sedative medicines – 741,492 units
- Anabolic steroids – 204,843 units
- Analgesic medicines – 161,670 units
- Erectile dysfunction – 103,816 units
- 28,302 units of Ivermectin
- – Mean while , 56, 302 units of COVID- 19 drugs were confiscated
- Also , over the past year , 461 commerce website were closed down that were found to be selling illegal and counterfeit drugs according to the annual HPRA report.
