Khalad Al-Anani,minister of Antiquities and Tourism in Egypt, revealed an important archaeological discovery,as the efforts of archaeologists succeeded in finding 59 conffins with mummies inside ,most of them in good condition ,dating back 2,600 years.
In a press conference held on this occasion, the Minister referred to the importance of this discovery, saying that it is one of the most important archaeological discoveries recently ,and that there is still much to discover in the same area.
The Saqqara region contains at least 11 pyramids , in addition to hundreds of ancient tombs dating back to the ages between the years 2920 BC to 2770 BC, and to the Coptic era in the period between 395 AD to 642 AD.
Muster Fawzi, secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, indicated that the preliminary research of the inscriptions on the coffins indicated that they were made specifically for priests , state leaders and the upper echelons of the people in the late period of the ancient pharaonic era between 664 BC to 525 BC .
The Saqqara region is located in the framework of the ancient capital of Memphis of ancient Egypt, which includes the pyramids of Giza, the pyramids of Abu Sir ,Abu Rawash and Dahshur, which have been listed as a world heritage area by UNESCO since 1970.
Theese coffins, in addition to the 11 wooden coffins that were recently unveiled in the Luxor region in southern Egypt ,will be transferred to the new Grand Egyptian Museum next to the Giza pyramids for display to the public.
