Irish Residency Permit

IRP (Irish residency Permit) – previously known as GNIB (Garda National Immigration Bureau) – is the residency permit in Ireland and is considered the actual visa when living in Ireland, it holds also the type residency (Stamp).
Depending on the type of stamp, the validity of the permit is decided.
Residency permit is issued in immigration office (INIS) in the nearest Garda (police) station to the residency address from this link.
Required Documents
- Original Passport

- Proof of Address (Tenant contract / Utility (Electricity/Gas) bill / Bank Statement)
- Employment Contract
- Work Support Letter (For Main traveler)
- Marriage Certificate with English Translation (For dependent visa traveler)
- Active bank card to pay fees in the office (no cash is accepted) (Fees 300 EUR per person)
- Date of entry to Ireland
- Registration deadline date placed in the passport when entered Ireland

Residency Permits Stamps for Critical Skills Employment Permit (CSEP)
When living in Ireland under CSEP, the first Stamp received is Stamp 1 that is renewed for the validity period of the CSEP.
After completing 21 months from your first day of entry to Ireland, you are eligible to upgrade you Residency Permit to Stamp 4
The required documents are the same as renewing the residency permit plus Stamp 4 Support Letter from DBEI
Support letter can be obtained from Department of Business Enterprise and Innovation (DBEI), prepare the following documents and send them via email to EPStamp4@dbei.gov.ie
- Fill in Request for Support Letter for Green Card/Critical Skills Employment Permit Holders seeking a “Stamp 4” on gov.ie
- Scan copy of Critical Skills Employment Permit from revenue.ie
- Employment Detail Summary for latest two years
- Confirmation of Employment from HR indicating title and salary
- Latest 3 pay slips
- Health insurance payment confirmations for latest two years
Once application is submitted, applicant received confirmation email with the application reference and reception date, applications processing progress can be followed on this link.
Stamp 4 permission validity is two years and can be renewed using the same documents to issue it (residency permit renewal documents plus Stamp 4 Support Letter).
After completing five years of combined Stamp 1/Stamp 4 status, you may be eligible to apply for long term residency or naturalization as an Irish citizen.
If you have a dependent spouse/partner who currently holds a Stamp 3 or Stamp 1G, they must remain in Stamp 3 or Stamp 1G status after you get your Stamp 4. They are not eligible for a Stamp 4 as your dependent. If your spouse/partner is working or intends to work they must continue to hold a Stamp 1G for this purpose. Note that if you apply to naturalize as an Irish citizen in the future (on the basis of having held Stamp 1 and Stamp 4 status), your dependent family members will likely be able to apply with you and be granted Irish citizenship based on current rules.
Decision on an application, including the grant letter, will be communicated to the applicant via email.
Residency Permit for Dependent Travelers
For traveler dependent on CSEP worker, they can have Stamp 3 / Stamp 1G where Stamp 1G allows them to work in Ireland, the required documents for the application:
- Original Passport
- Copy of Principal Worker’s employment permit*
- Copy of Principal Worker’s GNIB card*
- Proof of joint address with Principal Worker (Marriage Certificate with English Translation)
- Eircode (Irish postcode) of your address from ie
- Proof of medical insurance
- Proof that children are enrolled in school
- Certified English translation of any foreign language documents
- Date of entry to Ireland
- Registration deadline date placed in the passport when entered Ireland
Tips
To renew your IRP, you may be asked for your last 3 pay slips, and proof of health insurance coverage for yourself and your dependents.
